Summer is around the corner and you are thinking about “What the heck I am going to do this time around” or “Where am I going to go” and you know for sure that you don’t want to spend days going by without achieving anything then I’ve got good news! If you’ve had any of the questions above then this post is for you.
This happens to be the number one on my list. Travel! Especially if you happen to be a foreigner or an international student studying in another country, take the time to expose yourself to the surrounding nature and culture of the suburbs or bordering countries around you. Don’t sit and wallow in self-pity “Oh I don’t have money to travel” “Oh this” and “Oh that”. The main challenge that students face is travel expenditures that’s why it’s important to save separately for your trips ahead of time, all it takes is a little discipline and cutting back certain excesses. The logistics are also straightforward especially if you’re within Europe, there are multiple options. If you can’t afford a flight ticket, then take a bus or a train. Here are a few simple tips that would go a long way:
- Get your native friends to travel with e.g. Ukrainian students. This would cut costs on accommodation and intercity transport at your destinations.
- Look for deals through travel agencies because they generally have cheaper deals on tickets and accommodation. They also do group tours where you can get to meet new people if you’re the social or extroverted type. This way you don’t have to break the bank to travel and have a good time.
Most Ukrainians who travel a lot aren’t VERY rich. Most of them are middle class yet they’re able to do so because they look for deals and whatnot. So don’t dull biko.
Learn to swim
O.M.G this can’t be overemphasized. It’s one major safety skill to learn and it could come in handy at any time, you never can tell. Sitting back on my chair as I write out these things I laugh in pain because I still can’t swim to save my life. Take the time this summer to develop the skill even if it’s just to the amateur level and if you want to go further, to the professional level. You can take swimming classes with tutors who would teach you and ensure you don’t drown. There are several places which do the lessons, just ask around and I’m sure you’ll get
Take online courses
I know you just finished classes or you are on break and you just need this vacation to take out time for yourself and relax. However, there are free online courses you could take which don’t take a lot of time, and it would give your CV an edge and could come in handy when you need them, take those short courses, they don’t have to be related to the course you are doing now. It could be anything.
Anything that interests you just look into it and take them and you will thank yourself later when applying for jobs with those certificates written on your resume. Sites like www.coursera.org, www.udemy.com, www.edx.org, www.alison.com and so on. I currently take most of my courses on Alison and I’ve personally taken courses on Project Management, Sociology, and HIV Awareness and they have other options as well as fashion, health, business, videography, coding or just anything that tickles your fancy.
Help your community with your time or resources. This plays a huge role in making your resume look good and eye-catching aside that you could get to make lots of friends, network and learn a lot.
Learn the language
I know how I always whine and whimper about how ‘I can’t speak, I can’t speak’ and give lots of excuses but the truth is if you want to learn something and you make time for it then you can definitely do it, it’s as simple as dedicating a minimum of 20 min a day and a maximum of an hour to avoid boredom, it’s enough to learn phrases and words to use to kick start you into becoming a better speaker .
There’s no better way of learning or becoming more fluent, if you do not practice speaking and which the best way to do that is to make friends with locals, go to their events, join a club or refuse to speak any other language aside the foreign language when in public, engage your taxi driver in a conversation and other things. You would see that in no time you would start getting more fluent.
Explore the library
Summer is a great time to read, read, and read. There is a saying that ‘Readers are leaders and if not all readers are leaders then all leaders are readers’.The secret of men lies within their books. Dive into books and discover lots of hidden gems within them.
Teach English classes
“Teaching English and be paid while on it? Hell yes! There are jobs online you could apply for or opportunities around you, the secret is in making inquiries.
Learn how to bake or make more international dishes
There are so many platforms out there to virtually learn just about anything; go online, read blogs or YouTube, follow through the step by step process and remember that there’s room for error and cooking especially is a skill learned through repeated practice.
Learn a sport/ acquire a skill
It could be anything, volleyball, basketball, dance club (pole dance, hip hop dance, salsa. Or maybe you want to be better at public speaking or writing then take coaching classes and PRACTICE these skills. Don’t shy away from opportunities to speak in public this summer and find avenues to write. If you’re interested in vlogging then use your phone, don’t wait until you get a DSLR camera. Like someone once said the best camera is the one you have with you. Whatever it is you’ve always wanted to do, go for it, for there’s no better time than now.
Learn how to sew
You are handy, you love fashion, and you have this fantastic idea in your head that you don’t see around then just make them yourself! Develop your skills. Go on YouTube there are a lot of videos to learn from. Or you could meet already made tailors around and ask to learn from them. In no time, if you are passionate and consistent with it, you could start making these beautiful designs for yourself and others and who knows, turn it into an empire. There are a lot of people today who started out this way. It always boils down to your passion.
Go and practice / Do an internship
Go to your country this summer or you could secure an internship job outside your country, just make sure it legit and it’s perfect for you i.e you’re comfortable with the housing, feeding and the rest. It doesn’t have to be a paid internship. Summer is a time to grow, learn and acquire a lot. When you do and people begin to see the value you bring to the table, they wouldn’t mind paying you an extra coin to be a part of the company. Companies and organizations are always looking out for who will add to their company and not just take from them, so go you!
Organize picnics, get-togethers, camp, hike, go for a walk, gym, take driving lessons give back to the community, mentor someone or get a mentor, go for therapy, watch movies/documentaries. If you can sing then go to bars or restaurants and perform with the option of getting paid or just for the sake of it. It’s a good way to go about training yourself this summer. If you are in shape and have a great body, go scout for brands and ask to model for them (the worst thing that could happen is you get a no and if that happens too, keep pushing. Don’t let “a no” stop you from achieving whatever it is you set your mind to do.
Take a deep breath, relax and imagine yourself doing that one thing you love or always wanted to do and write them down and figure out a way to go about it. Call someone you trust to get a different opinion and hold you accountable (two heads are better than one). Time waits for no one.
If you believe you still have time and continue to procrastinate and not do a thing, you would wake up one day to find that you have simply wasted time and years and the last thing you want to do is regret the chances you didn’t take, therefore this is the best time to come out of your comfort zone and be the best you can be.
If you have ideas, dreams or visions, don’t let your fear, excuses or friends kill them. This is the time to try out things when you are young if it doesn’t go as planned; you move on and try another thing. please don’t sit back and do nothing then graduate and wish there was a lot more to you than just a certificate, oh I don’t want that for you. Many people made that mistake, just pursuing one certificate and letting other dreams die. It’s alright to have dreams so go out, start chasing your dreams. You are capable and more than enough.
